Dawn of Battle

Dawn
Dawn of an epic battle
Early morning chill
Facing off again
On the battlefield of time
Pre battle tension
Tensing
Sensing
The enormity of this months long struggle

Men rushing purposefully in the dark
Serious shades coloring their faces
Silently taking their places
Polishing
Cleaning
Meager arms
Regretting short supply
Nervous
White energy
Silent moments

Suddenly
Winged flocks take flight
Circling above
As the crack of the opening salvo
Pierces the September sky
Yisgadal
V’Yiskadesh
Shemei Rabboh

His nation thunders into battle one more time
Yehei Shmei Rabboh Mivorach L’Olam...

First night of Selichos

I cant beleive its that time of year again. Your poetry writing is amazing, as usual. As we have come to expect... pressure, anyone? Just teasing.... Good shabbos!

Very nice post but I don't get the battle metaphor. Who or what are we fighting?

these days are referred to as a battle in many instances..like in L'David Hashem..
The battle..is both private and communal...we have devised all sorts of strageties to try to confuse the soton...
My Rosh Yeshiva always used to interepret all the pesukim in shoftim and ki seitzei...in this light..
In Belz..the first day of selichos was called the first shot..the first taste of these days of awe..

kasamba...
Yeah..so do I...Now I need a good stragety.

Now's the time...

But we shouldn't focus on outside forces. It is ourselves that we need to fix.

yes...it definitely adds to the moment...

sara....
I wish I'd feel that more..

lkwdguy...
I think..the communal battle is won through the combined efforts of everyones individual efforts..

at the same time...we do find that for instance we dont blow shofar on erev rosh hashana..to confuse the soton...hashem..gives him sort of a day off on tom kippur..etc..
