Gulp.

Ouch.
That hurt.
And it's really true as well...

Was just discussing this with someone... all the chinese auctions and parlor meetings... and just plain (or rather, not so plain!) FOOD.

You also have to wonder how much of your tzedaka went toward the function itself..

Hmm, it's like the men's version of the typical Chinese auction: Win stunning custom sheitel! Noritake china! An Italian living room! Someone to chew your food! Tuition for a year! Scuba lessons! Sukkos in Japan!

Sample tons of food which you'll probably regret eating at our sumptuous and ridiculously ostentatious buffet!

(Oh... and, by the way... all proceeds go to tzedaka.)

allie..check the comments of last post.

I'm not dissing the organizations that deal with the reality..for what it is..

I just resent being thrown in with the dolphins...

we all have an animal soul. sometimes, to shut it up, we gotta feed it (literally). once he's happy, he won't bother the G-dly soul from doing G-dly things.

So true. I hate the kind of religious events that try and attract you with extras. Either you do it for the right reasons or don't.
Yet reality is differnet and we gotta live with it.

I love those events. I used to love to get dressed up and walk around looking at all the women in g-d awful jewlery that you knew was fake because no way this was by any of those familes' means. The men in white turtle necks with shiny shoes and black jackets. The women in pointy high heeled shoes and fur stoles. The snooty looks you get when you walk through the door not carrying a gucci bag. The whispers and giggles....holy shit, come to think of it, I hated those events.

Yeah, I've thought of this too.

But as Chaya said, it works. You gotta play by the rules.
