..do unto others.....

Here’s why I think all the latest newcomers that are crowding our neighborhoods should be sent back to where they came from.

1.They don’t assimilate. They don’t speak English. All the signs in their neighborhood are in their native tongue. They are culturally apart.

2. They are unhygienic. Their neighborhoods are dirty, smelly and breed disease.

3. They drive up criminal activity. From petty crimes to Organized Mobs. From prostitution to pickpocketing to murder, their neighborhoods and surrounding areas are dens of criminals.

We the upstanding citizens of the United States demand that the Government stop allowing this teeming problem into our midst. Stop taking away our jobs and stop shattering our way of life.

I apologoze..I was a little lazy to type out this whole post so I just copied and pasted a letter to the editor from the 1910s which reflected the prevalent sentiment at the time toward the Jews of the Lower East Side..

Heh, I saw the PS coming from the very first line :-P

Doesn't keep it from being a good one, though. Great post, actually.

David,

I wrote a post on this subject a while back, but you said it much better and more eloquently.

I think we forget that somewhere in the not so distant past our families are all immigrants (excepting those of us with American Indian ancestry)

So, on behalf of my grandparents, who immigrated in the 1930's from the Ukraine and Poland, and on behalf of my husband, who immigrated from Costa Rica a short 15 years ago, I thank you for this post!

DOTL:
While your line of reasoning seems logical, there is one point that you seem to overlook:

Our ancestors became legal citizens against all odds. (e.g. Anti Semitisim etc)

The "immigrant" community today do not want to become Americans; they want to remain Mexicans in America.

Our ancestors were Yidden that became-- for lack of a better term Jewish Americans.

The Mexicans on the other hand want to remain Mexicans that happen to live in America.

Look at Sinco deMayo. do you see any American flags at their events. Contra the Israeli parade.

I await your articulate response.

ahhhh
I was waiting for that point
sheesh 12 comments.

Granted the vast majority are here illegally and it's up to the government to deal with legalities as they deal with all the other legal issues that we soo zealously follow.

This post was not about that.
it's about good old fashioned xenophobia..that transcends the legalese.
Something tells me that if 12 million mild mannered swedes were to cross the border and would do all the menial labor that the mexicans are doing we'd be far more tolerant.
On the other hand if the Mexicans were coming legally we'd hear the same outcry about changing the laws to stop them.

As for the patriotism issue.
Wait another generation before you judge...
The second generation hispanics that I've encountered are all just as American as you and I.
And if you really want to find communities that don't assimilate you don't have to go very far..

So while, the government does or does not address this issue..
The way we relate to these newcomers, that want nothing more than a better life..shows alot about what we've learnt from our own past..

Ah! What is this about the hygiene?

Much has been said. Interesting comments. Tis true, that it is beyond the gov't and more so left to the response of the people and the action of how much we have learned (or failed to) up to this point.
