Hispa'alus
The more I observe the world the more I notice how fickle and impressionable people are.
In Mussar there's this idea called Hispa'alus.
Which is a little difficult to translate but means Impressionable or even Gullible...
This idea manifests itself in many ways.
One way is self-discipline.
To stay fully focused on the practical and not to be distracted by impressionable events that are irrelevent.
Not to be a prisoner of reaction.
In the Yeshiva of Kelm if there was a loud sudden noise in the back of the Beis Hamidrash no one turned around to look.
That would be a breach of this idea.
Today we've become such a curious breed.
But another manifestation of this idea is how truth is so colored by Impressions.
Example:
The cosmos are sooo vast and the center of the universe is so far from earth...we must therefore be irrelevent...and not as important as we once thought we were.
Would Christianity be taken seriously, debated and thought about if it were a small Middle Eastern sect numbering a few million?
Yet, the world spins on as it always has..
Spinning it's web of truths on the loom of impressionability.

I thought i was pretty important...but I figured that was just colored by my impression...
Hmmm....which is the truth then...? I'm confused...
Isn't that the basis of our hashkafa, that we ARE important? That every single, seemingly insignificant move of ours is so valued and important?
...אדם הוא עולם קטן
When I look at Christians, I wonder why they were the religion that the world decided was the "best" and most normal? But then again, the best things are always the hidden ones.
We are very significant.
OMG, aidel...
are y-you a R-ravenclaw as well?!
Which year were you? Wow, never thought I'd meet a fellow Ravenclaw here!
im confused.. how can this thought ever be an accepted way of world thinking... we all have a mission on this world every animal every person every bug...so how can anybody be irrelevent...its like the world needs a dose of concerta.
the truth is we often fall prey to outside influences due to circumstances beyond our control the talmidim of kelm were zocheh to live in a simpler time in a time when things like chochma and bina were truly appreciated they were on higher spiritual levels able to block out outside interferences both concrete and spiritual..but just as chav stated its the foundation of our religon to believe that we each have a significant tafkid and every thought and move has its reasonsfor if we all have that pintele yid inside of us how can anything we do ever be insignificant. ps sorry for my rambling
doint ahndastand.
just catching up...new career of sort
i see you are just as sharp as always.
hispa'alus. certainly it must fade with time, right? like hormones and enzymes, does production decrease with age? for this one, hope so.
anony..
you are important..
thats precisely the point..
But if one were to be impressionable..and look at his/her place.in the cosmos..
youd feel pretty small..
chav...
exactly...
To understand..that if 80,000 people fill a stadium for a concert...
Theyre all there for ONE person...
hard for someone without a logical brain to understand..
aidel...
well..most christians today can look back to the glorious act of their ansecstor..being forced to christianity on pain of death..
so much for truth..
chav..
oh this place is crawling with ravenclaws...
shhh
d_d...
its not really a way of thinking..
Its self perception..based on impressions...
