Coherent rambling

Some of you might remember from last year I just don’t feel connected to Purim.
I don’t like to drink nor do I like to see drunk people.
The seudah somehow lacks meaning enveloped by the balagan of the day.
An introvert like me just doesn't feel comfortable letting loose like that.
I much prefer Tu B'Shvat

There is one aspect of the day that I always found to be very true though. The idea that on Purim the real you comes out.
You’re unmasked by your mask.
The Hester Panim...hidden..revealed..
I find that people dress up as their supressed selves. They get to play roles they wish they could all year.
They get to express what they really want to..
In essence that’s what we do through ou all year through our blogs.
We create personas that perhaps reflect more accurately the real you that somehow cannot always exist in the arena of physical reality.
So for us its Purim all year..

So I'd like to wish you all a Happy Purim!

Why do you think the costume reflects the true inner self, rather than just a creative idea?

I'm not saying this is the case all the time...But I find many times that people who would love to be more "cool" will dress the part on Purim...
People who wish they were Chassidish will play the role..etc..

That's an interesting point about our hidden selves revealed.

What might help to make you feel better is to think about how grateful we are that we survised and that haman didn't win.

I loved being in Eretz Yisroel on Purim. It felt more real there - wasn't just a bunch of drunk boys stopping traffic and throwing up all over the carpet.
I remember being at a family, and the father and sons all started singing aishes chayil to the mother, and the oldest boy, who was normally an introvert and very quiet, started praising his mother to the skies. (and his father, too!)

Wow, how I miss those days...

Purim here just isn't the same...
:(

oh I know...Purim in Israel was alot more spiritual..
I had this one family that I loved eating by...the father was a tzadik..and while he and everyone got a little high there was no sign of the rampant drunkedness that you see here..
I miss it too
:-(

ok enough...smile,..

I see what you're saying. And I agree. Some people go too far. I guess we just need some good examples like you and some others.

Have a good purim

I'm with Dreamer-- I love E"Y, but we can choose our derech wherever we are. It is up to us to impose meaning on the day, instead of basing our feelings on what we've seen in the world. ("the way it's celebrated...I dislike")

I do what I can for myself, but as a baal habayis David should have no problem deciding what kind of Purim his family will have.

About the costumes/blog thing--
Mata: He didn't say that costumes per se reveal the true self. It's that on Purim, ironically the day on which we wear costumes (which may or may not represent our true ambitions) our true selves are revealed. Or supposed to be, at least. I'm not going to go into a whole discourse now, but the point of the costume (as I understand) is not to display the truth but to emphasize that the surface is NOT the truth. E.g. what we look like all year is not necessarily the truth.

True
However the difference between a purim seudah and for instance a Pesach seder is ..that the outside totally invades the Purim Seuda..between groups..realtives...vagabonds...Its hard to put your stamp on it..as you could other Yomim Tovim..
And re: the costmes...
well said

OOA...
I was waiting for that question
:-)
Hm I think I'll be a dot.
