Vindicated

If I had to choose a favorite author, it would most likely be Anton Chekhov. I've always loved his plays and stories..

Well here's a letter he wrote to a friend...

"You complain that my characters are gloomy. Alas it is not my fault! It turns out that way involuntarily and while I am writing it does not seem to me that I am writing gloomily; in any case, I am always in a good mood when I work. It is noteworthy that gloomy people and melancholiacs always write merry things, while the cheerful depress people with their writings. And I am a cheerful man; at least as the saying goes, I've enjoyed myself the first thrity years of my life"

Thank you Mr. Chekhov.

Interesting...

So according to him, Poe was a happy man in good spirits when he wrote... Now that's an idea
:-)

To bluntly state my ignorance in Chekhovian literature, what does he write? He sounds like a fascinating study...

It could be Poe was happy...who knows?
Look at all the bright colors in van goghs paintings..
Clowns are supposedly the most depressed people around. The famous Opera Il Pagliacci...about a depressed clown..(the aria Vesti La Giubba..with him laughing at himself..)

Chekhov..is regarded as arguably the best short story writer ever. His characters..and portraits of real life Russia 100 years ago..are just beautiful..
He also wrote a few famous plays..like The Seagull, The Cherry Orcharrd, Uncle vanya and The 3 Sisters..

I once wrote a post on one of his stories..

love the quote (lol), and i, too, now want to know more about this author.
personally, no one can touch Chaim Potok, for me, but, this guy hints to be quite charming indeed.

And since his medium is the short story..they're short enough to read...without taking too much time..

indeed he said that.
He was a doctor...but his passion was writing..
hence that quote..

i write gloomy stuff and happy stuff when i'm gloomy and cheerless and down in the dumps.

and i don't oftn write when i'm in a really cheerful mood.
i'm usually out and about when i'm feeling great.

I remember once watching a theatre production of "Uncle Vanya"; the actors were extremely bad, I kept sucking on licorice cough sweets, trying to keep myself from falling asleep. I dozed off twice and since I had an aisle seat, would have fallen over had my company not saved me from hitting my head on the theatre floor. At the end of the play, I'd sucked away almost two sachets of those cough sweets, my tongue felt like cardboard, my joints ached, and my friends from Russia commented, "Wow, those actors were way better than Russian ones."
