It has the power to bring long, awesome, beautiful and complicated words and sentences to a grinding halt.

I love that thought.
And in the "dotcom" era, we can understand the significance of it so much more.
I think the most powerful part is that it is only because of its smallness that it achieved such greatness. Humankind would not have embraced a more complicated symbol as enthusiastically. After all, ampersands serve only one purpose & thus appear far less frequently than dots.
