A Tale of Two Critters

A Tale of two critters..
Two cousins
Two rodents
One loved..watched..fed
The other loathed..feared..killed
Same basic anatomy
One has large eyes..slim figure..bushy tail
The other..beady eyes..fat figure...slimy tail
They both survive
They both thrive
One scampers in yards..up trees..through the park
The other in sewers..and subway tunnels in the dark
One is fed the fruit of the earth
The other feeds off the refuse of earth

Look around..you’ll see squirrels and rats
All around..
Your neighbors..colleagues...family
We feed off love..self worth and esteem
Its what keeps us alive
Wherever we find it..in order to survive

So next time you’re about to label someone
A child
Tell him he’s not smart..not good looking...not like his siblings
Tel her she’s not pretty..not skinny...has no friends

Remember
They’ll survive
They’ll even thrive

Not as a squirrel
But perhaps as a rat...

Got a problem with that?

You are so right! We have the power to make or break people, and the tongue is a weapon we ought not to wield lightly.

The way I understand what you've written..
is that each person is special in their own way...
and everyone has been created for different purposes..to accomplish different things...
and if someone happens to look like a rat (less pleasant in some form, figure, position, mannerism, intelligence..etc etc..)
..you are in no position to judge them negatively...
they are perhaps here to do a rat's job..and to do it well..more likely much better than anyone else would be able to...

let us each realize and reach our goals.

I want to make some profound comment but I think your post has pretty much been interpretated by the more well spoken few who've commented. I'll just squeak.

yup..thanks

Ok..Heres the explanation..

We all have the potential of being squirrels or rats. It depends on how much postive attention we get...if were fed..and loved then we thrive off of that. If not..we develop a poor image of ourselves..and go underground to get fed..attention..and a substitute for love....and live as rats..

lol...!

Bravo!!!

Well, I have always thought squirrels were just rats with bushy tails and a better marketing plan, but I see your point---- good poem by the way.

The message is so true a beautifully put. Yet I have seen a squirrel kill a bird... How do you understand that?

Even the kind and loving can have a dark side.

to the squirrel..the bird is nothing but a meal..theres no evil or darkness there. Humans are the only ones that kill for other reasons

Not all rats are grey, most are not. Also, unlike squirrels, rats are very intelligent and very social.
